Our new Pottery Video where we making a Pottery Primal Bowl hand-building.

To make a primal bowl, you will need some basic tools and materials.

Materials:

  • Clay

  • Water

  • Rolling Pin

  • Knife

  • Smoothing Tool

  • Wooden Board

Step 1: Prepare the Clay The first step in making a primal bowl is to prepare the clay. You can purchase clay at a local pottery supply store or online. Make sure to choose clay that is suitable for hand-building. Once you have the clay, cut off a piece that is about the size of a grapefruit. Knead the clay to remove any air bubbles and make it easier to work with.

Step 2: Flatten the Clay Next, use a rolling pin to flatten the clay into a pancake shape. Make sure the clay is evenly flattened and has a consistent thickness throughout.

Step 3: Shape the Bowl To shape the bowl, gently press your thumbs into the center of the flattened clay. Slowly pinch and pull the clay up and out, creating a bowl shape. You can also use your fingers to smooth out any lumps or bumps in the clay.

Step 4: Smooth the Bowl Use a smoothing tool to smooth out the inside and outside of the bowl. This will give the bowl a more finished look and remove any imperfections.

Step 5: Trim the Edges Use a knife to trim the edges of the bowl. This will give the bowl a more uniform shape and remove any excess clay.

Step 6: Let the Bowl Dry Once you have finished shaping and smoothing the bowl, let it dry completely. This may take several hours or even a few days depending on the humidity in your area.

Step 7: Fire the Bowl After the bowl has dried completely, it is time to fire it. Firing the clay will harden it and make it more durable. You can fire the bowl in a kiln or a pottery oven. Follow the instructions that came with your clay to ensure you fire it at the right temperature and for the right amount of time.

Step 8: Decorate the Bowl (Optional) Once the bowl has been fired, you can decorate it if you like. You can use paint, glaze, or other decorative materials to make the bowl unique and personalized.
