How to make a Pottery candle on the potter's wheel.

Today we are making a pottery candle - how to make a Pottery candle on the wheel. It will be a pottery candle after it will dry and we will carve the candle so stay tuned for the next video where we will make the pottery carving.

Step 1: Preparing the Clay

The first step in making a pottery candle on the potter's wheel is preparing the clay. It is important to choose a good quality clay that is easy to work with and is suitable for candle making. You can purchase pottery clay from a local pottery store or online.

Once you have the clay, knead it for a few minutes to get rid of any air pockets. This will make it easier to work with and prevent it from cracking during the process. Then, weigh out the amount of clay you need for your candle and form it into a ball.

Step 2: Centering the Clay

The next step is to center the clay on the potter's wheel. This is a crucial step that requires practice and patience. Start by placing the clay ball in the center of the potter's wheel and press it down firmly. Turn on the wheel and use your hands to center the clay.

To center the clay, press down on the clay with your thumbs while keeping your hands moist. Use one hand to apply pressure to the top of the clay and the other hand to apply pressure to the side of the clay. This will help to push the clay towards the center of the wheel.

Step 3: Opening the Clay

Once the clay is centered, it is time to open it up. Use your thumbs to create a hole in the center of the clay ball. Then, use your fingers to widen the hole by gently pulling the clay upwards and outwards. This will create the shape of the candle.

Be sure to leave a lip at the top of the candle, which will help to hold the candle wick. Use a sponge or water to keep the clay moist as you work.

Step 4: Shaping the Candle

Once you have the basic shape of the candle, it is time to start shaping it. Use your fingers and a shaping tool to smooth out any bumps and create the desired shape. You can create different shapes and textures by adding grooves, ridges, or other designs to the surface of the clay.

Step 5: Adding the Wick

After you have finished shaping the candle, it is time to add the wick. Cut a piece of candle wick to the desired length and attach it to the bottom of the candle. Use your fingers to press the clay around the wick to hold it in place.

Step 6: Drying and Firing

The final step is to dry and fire the pottery candle. Allow the candle to dry completely for several days to a week. Then, place it in a kiln and fire it at a high temperature. This will harden the clay and make it strong enough to withstand the heat of the candle.

Once the pottery candle is finished, it can be painted or glazed to add color and texture. This is an optional step, but it can enhance the beauty of the candle.
