New Pottery Video where we are making a Pottery Basin.
To make the Pottery Basin as it will be quite big in size, the potter's wheel needs to be prepared before starting the project. The wheel head needs to be cleaned and moistened, and a clay bat needs to be secured to the wheel head. The clay bat is a flat piece of wood or plastic that sits on top of the wheel head and holds the clay in place.
Now it's time to start shaping the basin. The potter will need to center the clay on the wheel head. Centering is the process of getting the clay in the middle of the wheel head and making it symmetrical. This is an important step because it makes the rest of the process much easier. Once the clay is centered, the potter will need to create a depression in the center of the clay. This will form the base of the basin.
The potter will then begin to shape the sides of the basin. They will use their hands to gently pull the clay upwards, creating a cylindrical shape. This process is called pulling up. The potter will need to be careful not to pull too quickly or too forcefully, as this can cause the clay to collapse.
As the potter continues to shape the basin, they will use their fingers and tools to create the desired form. The sides of the basin can be shaped in a variety of ways, depending on the potter's preferences. They can be curved, straight, or have a flared rim.
Once the basin has been shaped to the desired form, the potter will need to trim the excess clay from the bottom. This process is called trimming, and it ensures that the basin is balanced and stable. The potter will use a trimming tool to remove the excess clay, being careful not to cut too deeply into the base.
The basin will then need to be dried and fired in a kiln. The drying process can take several days, depending on the size and thickness of the basin. Once it has been completely dried, it can be fired in a kiln. Firing is the process of heating the clay at high temperatures to harden it and create a permanent shape.
Once the basin has been fired, it can be decorated and glazed. Glazing is the process of applying a liquid coating to the surface of the pottery. This coating creates a waterproof barrier and adds color and texture to the piece as to our preference.
