Pottery throwing - How to Make a Pottery Lamp

The first step in making a pottery lamp is to create the base. This can be done on the potter’s wheel or by hand-building. If you’re using a wheel, center your clay and begin to shape it into a cylinder. The size of your base will depend on the size of your lampshade, so keep that in mind as you work. As you shape your clay, make sure to leave enough room at the top for your lamp kit to fit inside.

Once your base is complete, it’s time to carve out a channel for the lamp cord. This can be done with a trimming tool or a loop tool. Simply carve out a channel that runs from the bottom of the base to the top, leaving enough room for the cord to exit the base and connect to the lamp kit.

After the channel is carved, it’s time to create a hole for the lamp kit. This can be done with a hole cutter or a sharp tool. Make sure to measure the size of the hole needed for your kit before you begin. Slowly work your way into the clay, creating a hole that is slightly larger than the kit. Once you’ve created the hole, it’s time to smooth out the edges and make sure everything fits properly.

With the base of your pottery lamp complete, it’s time to move on to the top. The top of your lamp will serve as a decorative piece, and can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like. If you’re using a wheel, you can create a lid or a small bowl shape that will fit over the top of the base. If you’re hand-building, you can create a dome or a curved piece that will sit on top of the base.

Once you’ve created your top piece, it’s time to create a hole for the lampshade. Again, this can be done with a hole cutter or a sharp tool. Make sure to measure the size of the hole needed for your lampshade before you begin. Slowly work your way into the clay, creating a hole that is slightly larger than the shade. Once you’ve created the hole, it’s time to smooth out the edges and make sure everything fits properly.

Now that both the base and the top of your pottery lamp are complete, it’s time to join them together. The best way to do this is to create a slip-and-score joint.

First, score the edges of the base and the top with a sharp tool. Then, create a small amount of slip by mixing together some clay and water. Apply the slip to both the base and the top, then press them together firmly. Smooth out the edges and make sure the joint is secure.

Finally, it’s time to let your pottery lamp dry completely before firing it in a kiln. Once it’s fired, you can glaze it in any color or design that you’d like. When your lamp is finished, simply insert the lamp kit into the hole at the top of the base, add a lampshade, and you’ve created a beautiful and functional pottery lamp.
